Vietnam Government has issued the Decree No. 17/2019/ND-CP about Vietnam E-Visa, adding 34 more countries and 2 territories to the eligible list of applying electronic visa, included Austria. This government documents will take effect from February 2019 to February 2021. In this period of time, Austria passport holders can apply Vietnam E-visa online.
Vietnam e-visa is a document issued by Immigration Department. It permits the holders to enter Vietnam single entry with maximum 30 days of stay. The applicants can apply online though the internet, and then receive the E-visa document through email. The E-visa is an effort of Vietnam Government to reduce the complicated procedure of getting visa through the embassy or consulate.
Vietnam E-visa program was first launched on February 2017 by Decree No. 07/2017/ND-CP, which showed that 40 countries can apply this kind of visa. By the end of 2017, this list was added 6 more countries. And from February 2019, the list was expanded again with 34 more countries and 2 territories.
In summary, until now (February 2019), 80 countries and 2 territories are eligible for Vietnam e-visa, included Austria.

When you already got the E-visa, you print it out and bring it to the passport control counter. The Immigration officers will check and stamp onto your passport 30 days single entry. No additional fee on arrival.
If you want to get multiple entry or more than 30 days of stay, you should choose visa on arrival. This type of visa allows you to enter single or multiple times, with 3 months, 6 months or 1 year staying.
